"I remember passing by a sign and not being able to read it
because of the darkness. I also didn't want to take the time
to do so. Besides I knew what it said, or at least thought I
knew. I was sure it was the sign telling you it was 4.6 miles
up to Appleton Pass.
So I thought I was at the 3-mile point
of the trail. I had reached Olympic Hot Springs at the end of
the asphalt road in about 30 minutes on the way up. I passed
that 4.6-mile sign after about 50 minutes. So once I passed
what I thought was that sign on the way down, I knew I was
only about 20 minutes from that asphalt road that leads
down from the hot springs. 20 minutes! But that sign was
still another two miles or more away. I crossed the second
of those two foot bridges across what I thought was the
main stem of Boulder Creek.
"Then the trail started its switchbacks up through the dark, dense forest."
